Review: LG E900 Optimus 7

The LG E900 Optimus 7 is one of the first Windows Phone 7 smartphones. This is the newest version of Microsoft's mobile operating system, which gives a completely new experience. The LG Optimus 7 has a 3.8 inch LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels, so you always have a great viewing.

Overview

Pleasure at its Best

With the LG E900 Optimus 7 you can enjoy the Internet, photography, film, music and more at its best. Equipped with a sophisticated Windows 7 Phone operating system, all these features are even easier to approach. The sharp 3.8-inch touchscreen of the Optimus 7 contributes to a pleasant user experience. Shoot HD movies or photos with the 5 megapixel camera and share it with friends and family, thanks to the Play To-function. This function provides multimedia streaming to any Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) device such as a television.

Quick access to every function

The LG E900 Optimus 7 Phone runs on the Windows 7 operating system. Clear square areas, called tiles, giving you one-click access to functions such as camera or Office, and give a glance information about missed calls or new e-mails. Search through endless menus is an inconvenience from the past. Instead, a simple swipe is enough. The so-called live-tiles go a step further, once your Facebook or Twitter contacts update a post, the images will change in the tile.

Get the most out of every day

With Windows Phone 7 you get the most out of your LG E900 Optimus 7 on a workday. Schedule appointments with the clear agenda, send and receive e-mails from multiple accounts or search for news on the Internet with a WiFi and HSDPA connection. With Office you start working outside the door. All information from colleagues, customers or business partners are in reach thanks to the hub together. So you will have your own moment to decide whether it is more convenient to call, or to text or e-mail  a message. If your Optimus 7 is filled with sensitive information, it is also a pleasant thought that your phone can remotely be erased.

Web Support

Web Support

The Phone's Web Browser is still Windows Internet Explorer 7, but luckily nothing left of the old Pocket Internet Explorer and works well for a change. Pages are very fast and are smooth to navigate. Scrolling on a page during loading and zooming is no problem using the familiar pinch movement. Of course you can browse with multiple tabs at the bottom and there are shortcuts available for a page to bookmark. You can also add webpage to your tiles screen, this will give you quick access to that page. You don't have Flash and Silverlight is also reflected in the browser.

Upcoming Update 7.5, codenamed Mango

Many new consumer-oriented features will appear in the next major release of Windows Phone (version 7.5), codenamed Mango. Perhaps the most anticipated new feature is improved multitasking support, Bing Audio, which will identify songs by listening to music, a la Shazam; Bing Vision, which will provide barcode scanning along with a host of camera-assisted search functions; the addition of turn-by-turn navigation to Bing Maps; speech recognition support in the messaging app; and a new native podcast player. The latest info from the Windows Phone Dev Podcast shows Windows Live Messenger, Facebook Chat, and AOL IM coming to Messaging, Office 365 support, group messaging, artist on lock screen, WiFi hotspot support, visual voicemail, and more.

Dreamweaver Extensions

We have tested our Ajax Event Calendar, Ajax AutoComplete, Universal CSS Navigation Menu, HTML5 Slideshow, HTML5 MP3 Player, HTML5 Video Player and Fish Eye Menu.

Shows the basic usage of the Ajax Event Calendar in a Web Application for Online Reservation or Event Systems.

Both extensions, Ajax AutoComplete (left) and HTML5 Slideshow (right) are doing a great job. Unfortunately it won't support enough html elements to engage HTML5 Image Enhancer for the image gallery. (click on the screenshot to open the demo)

You see that Internet Explorer 7 won't support the HTML5 MP3 Player's SoundManager 2 with the needed Flash capabilities. But it will play separately.

Again, not enough support, but the mapped regions in order to connect the remote control with the HTML5 Video Player do their jobs.

Conclusion

LG Optimus 7 is a refreshing good device. It's strong and solidly built and is a master in web browsing. The screen perfectly clear and the camera gives great pictures. Windows Phone 7 a promising platform that looks pretty amazing and is well integrated with many web services. This gives the device a position in the crowded and competitive smartphone market.
