Windows XP Home Edition and PHP?
(November 28, 2002)
Question:
I have Windows XP Home Edition installed on my computer and I cannot use PWS or IIS to test my PHP/MySQL websites locally. What can I do?
Answer:
There's a preconfigured package called PHPTriad which is free, and installs into Windows XP HE without a hitch. If you aren't interested in learning to configure Apache from scratch, this is the way to go (the package includes Apache server, as a matter of fact -- you just have all the tedious work done for you).
Even better, the last free version of PHPTriad (v2.2) changed its name to Sokkit when it went to 3.x. You can get Sokkit for a nominal fee (about 20 bucks), and it's worth ten times as much if you want a VERY easy front end, no installation hassles, and complete compatibility with DW MX.
The free version (PHPTriad) works just as well, but doesn't include the great interface and control panel. You can pick that up at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad
The newer pay version is available at: http://www.sokkit.net
