When I start Dreamweaver CC I get the following message:
"The Document Type "Less CSS Style" will not be added because it uses a file extension that is already associated with a prior Document Type."
What file extension association should I be modifying?

Hello,

What is your DW version? When exactly this message appears? Did you download the latest version from our website?

Can you please tell us when exactly do you see this error? What happens when you create a new LESS file and save it?

As stated in the original post, the message appears when DW starts.
I created a new less file and saved it, shut down DW and restarted it. Still getting the message.

Please uninstall the extension, clear your DW cache( www.dmxzone.com/go/16740/clearing-dreamweaver-s-cache/ ), restart DW and install the extension again.

  1. Extension uninstalled
  2. Cache cleared
  3. DW restarted
  4. Extension reinstalled

  5. Message continues to appear
Tried the above steps a few times
Could there be a conflict with previous version of DW (CS5) being still installed?

Hi Les,

Maybe you got the wrong version, could you please again download the ZXP file of the extension, it should have CC in the name then install it on DW CC.

Greetings,
George

I've downloaded the zxp file for DMXzone LESS CSS Compiler and am still getting the same message when Dreamweaver CC starts. The less extension is working fine, so I guess I'll just have to keep ignoring the message.

I also have this issue, but it's a little different.

The extension has never worked, if code hi-lighting is any indication.

And even when I remove the extension, I still can't get rid of that message appearing.

Any thoughts?

Hi Steve. I'm not sure about your issue, but mine was only resolved when I re-installed Dreamweaver after a hard-drive crash.

Hi. I have the same problem. I think it is because the .less file extension was associated with DW before installing this DW extension. Now I don't know how to remove the file association.

I also have this problem and I can't get it to go away! I don't even want the extension anymore. I have removed the extension from Dreamweaver, I have empties the cache, I have done every suggestion I have seen and it STILL shows up with the message of "The Document Type 'Less CSS Style' will not be added because it uses a file extension that is already associated with a prior Document Type." I'm on Dreamweaver CC. Please help!

I have the same problem, "The Document Type 'Less CSS Style' will not be added because it uses a file extension that is already associated with a prior Document Type" on Dreamweaver CC (with all updates) running Windows 8.1 (with all updates -- except update 1 which will be released on 4/8) that was a clean install on a new PC last week. This was the first extension I installed.

DMXzone guys: This popup when the green Dreamweaver logo appears is irritating, and if you install Dreamweaver CC you should see it yourselves.

For those of you having this error, I figured out how to correct it as I was having the same trouble.

You'll need to edit (2) files in your %appdata% folder. Location for Windows 7 is -
%appdata%\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CC 2014\en_US\Configuration

File to edit #1: Extensions.txt
- Remove "LESS" from the List of Style Sheets (Line 8 or so)
- Verify that DMXZone has corrected added the extension (located at the bottom of the .txt file) should say "LESS:Less CSS Files"

Location -
%appdata%\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CC 2014\en_US\Configuration\DocumentTypes\

File to edit #2:
- MMDocumentTypes.xml

Search the document and find the record for the LESS entry. Delete it and verify that dmxzone has created a second LESS entry at the bottom.
- You'll want to delete the tags and everything inside the <documenttype </documenttype>
- Save the file and reload Dreamweaver CC.

For anyone on a mac, the following worked for me.

Open up `MMDocumentTypes.xml` (located at: Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ Username ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ Adobe ▸ Dreamweaver CC 2014.1 ▸ en_US ▸ Configuration ▸ DocumentTypes ▸ MMDocumentTypes.xml)

Delete all content between the <documenttype> </documenttype> tags that refer to `DMXzone` (mine was the last entry).

Note: Be careful not to accidentally delete the final </documenttypes> tag (with an s) as it wraps the entire XML and dreamweaver won't launch without it.. if the indentation doesn't look right, chances are you deleted it.

Worked perfectly on my Mac with CS6. I upgraded to CC (2015) and I cannot get it to work at all... Using DMXzone Less CSS Compiler Version 1.0.0 from the Adobe Add-Ons Portal. I tried all these hacks and nothing is working. So this issue still exists. I get a message: While executing onLoad in dmxLessCompiler.htm, a JavaScript error occurred. It stinks when you have something that worked and now you have to find another way to get the job done. Its really awful that Dreamweaver does not have this functionality natively.

Thanks Shane.. It worked.
If anybody has a problem finding MMDocumentTypes.xml. Search for it and include invisible files.. The Less CSS Style stuff is near the bottom. Use an app called EasyFind on the Mac.

Me again. Mac OS 10.12.6 Using DW2018. Adobe updated the latest DW to ver. 18.0 build 10136. First time I boot, shows exactly the same error message again. SO I found the file MMDocumentType.xml.. same place. edited with textedit (like I did before).. (twice) DW shows an error that that file (by name) is corrupted and won't boot DW. Replaced it with backup, DW boots but same error msg.
There are two of these files MMDocumentType.xml. (actually 3)
