Hi,
I'm thinking of using mySQL instead of my Access databases and would appreciate a bit of advice.
Firstly, what do i need to use mySQL? I've already got the install file, web server, UD4.
Secondly how do you go about connecting to mySQL?
More questions will follow i'm sure, but this will suffice for now.
thanks.

When you say you've got it all what does that mean.

Are you using Phakt and php or asp, cfm or jsp? What OS?

I am fairly new to mySQL but may be able to help if I knew more about your set up.

Marty

Thanks,
Marty

Cheers Marty,

win98, ASP/VBscript

I must say though after i installed it, the UI scared me a bit, i didnt have a clue where to go.

As I say,i'm thinking of swapping over as im going to need a much larger DB than what ive got.

I've seen horror stories about it, but also a lot of people praise it, so i'm open to try it if it isn't too much grief.

mySQL beats the shit out of Access at any level of application in my experience. unless you purposefully want to design a poncy unreliable microsoft database to store you mom's barry white cd collection. at least that's what i used it for <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

you'll be better off using PHP as a language for MySQL, together with Impakt's phantastic application server model Phakt.

also, don't be frightened by the UI of MySQL, i have a cunning plan! Download a tool called MySQL Front (www.mysqlfront.de) which gives MySQL and very nice windows UI which also includes all the tools and utilities you will need for everyday use without having to go into the deep cavities of MySQL's interface.

that's a good start for now.

if you can't find MySQLfront send me an e-mail i will send it to you. it will change your life. or your money back etc etc
