I think it would be a good idea to add an 'accepted answer' option to a posting - like on www.experts-exchange.com/
That would allow the author to say that they were happy with the answers they'd been given and that the post could now be closed. A number of posts are solved with the 1st reply.

Just an idea

Shall I take the lack of interest as a NO then?

i think its a great idea personally

but with this forum using a SnitZ board, it may not be possible, but i'm not the boss.

Lets make it happen then.
I've not used Sntiz before - but surely you must be allowed to add a field with a flag or make minor modifications
I'd be happy to help out if wanted

Now there's talk about revamping the forums and including a CSS area (see my other post) I'm going to resurect this issue too.
Would it also be possible to include a mechanism for the posting author to mark a topic as completed i.e. they've got the answer they were looking for. Just browsing through the active topics there are quite a few that have been resolved but you've actually got to go into each post to find that out.
It would also be nice to have a list of unanswered questions and maybe hot topics?

Also (borrowing from www.sitepoint.com here) i think some means of rating the replies or the author would allow quality answers to rise to the top.
You could then have things like a monthly / annual MVP, that gets a free e-book
The answers people would give on the forums would need to be helpful (no one wants negative feedback)
Which could help kickstart the forums generally and bring them back to life a bit

Along with giving the author the option to 'close' a post to say that they are happy that its been successfully resolved I think the Mod's should have similar power.

I have seen a number of posts that appear abandoned and it would be nice to 'tidy' them up. Maybe this could be done automatically... e.g. any post that has had no reply in 7 days is flagged as closed. Might also auto email the author / forum mod to notify them so they can override it

7 days can blur by me and feel like 3 days. I really like the idea of emailing the author that it will close soon and a link to confirm or override the closing.
