By the FAQ, here's the rundown I've read so far...

<b>Merger name:</b> Adobe Systems, Inc.
<b>Merger or bought-out?</b> Adobe <i>bought</i> Macromedia.
<b>Employess affected</b> Adobe has 4,000+ and Macromedia has 1,400+ (all are staying so far).
<b>When is this transaction expected to close?</b> by Fall (fourth quarter) 2005.
<b>Annual expected revenue combined:</b> over <b>2 Billion</b> dollars a year.
<b>Main publicised reason for the buyout:</b> Flash and Adobe PDF.

<b>Will planned product releases for Macromedia or Adobe be affected?</b> [We] do not anticipate any changes with respect to our ongoing business plans.

<b>Will this affect the planned release of Macromedia Studio MX later this year?</b> No.

<b>What happens to the Macromedia brand?</b> Adobe recognizes the strong equity of the Macromedia brand. That said, it makes great business sense for a company the size of the combined company to align behind a single corporate brand. Over time, Macromedia products will transition to the Adobe brand. Adobe expects to keep and continue investing in key Macromedia product brands.

<b>Are there areas of duplication in product lines? If so, how will that be addressed?</b> Adobe and Macromedia are committed to serving the needs of our combined customers. The companies are largely complementary, and thus the amount of competition between us is limited. Post closing, we believe the industry will remain as dynamic and competitive as it is today. Until the close of transaction, the companies will continue to operate business and usual. The combined company will not be able to create a joint product roadmap until after the transaction is closed.

<b>Do you expect to integrate the FlashPlayer and the Adobe Reader?</b> The complementary functionality of FlashPlayer and Adobe Reader will enable the deployment of a more robust cross-media, rich-client technology platform. The combined company will continue to be committed to the needs of both the FlashPlayer and Adobe Reader users.

If there is an extension out there you have wanted to buy to assist you in your web development - better get it now because Adobe has NO history of promoting 3rd party FREE extensions and will quickly move to shut down our wonderful Dreamweaver community as they hate the fact they don't make a dollar out of it ...

I feel betrayed - all the loyalty I've shown Macromedia through all their struggles to develop Dreamweaver etc AND now - well it's all over ...

Maybe someone else will come up to the plate ...

You may not know this but Adobe bought out Pagemaker a product similar to Quark and they kept that going with extensions and versions. So I wouldn't be too quick to judge them.

I wonder what will happen to Golive? Will the two co's and their software still run side by side, or will we see a merging of the best bits? That can't be a bad thing, although isn't this what everyone keeps slapping Micro$oft on the wrist for doing - trying to take over the world or something?

So I guess we'll all be using new software packages soon, with names such as Freelustrator or Illuhand; Fireshop or Photoworks; Goweaver or Dreamlive...

Hmmm...

Aniboy remember Pagemill ? The same could happen with GoLive. Dreamweaver is better, and Adobe knows it. maybe Fireworks could be part of Adobe, like ImageReady. And Freehand... a fusion with flash ? i'm not giving up using Fireworks for anything, i'm too comfortable with it.

but as far as designing goes, i'd rather hand code, than use GoLive or something similiar.

dreamweaver doesn't write the best code, but it works when u need it to.

although i do like matt's suggested name of Dreamlive <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

I think in a fusion of Freehand and Flash, and Adobe could get the best of freehand for Illustrator.
Adobe will create a new action Script for Flash called "AAS3"(Adobe Action Script 3) or "APS3"(Action PostScript 3)

My favourite name for Dw is "Adobe Dreamweaver CSMX 2007" <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

So what's the popular opinion about what our strategy should be? I have MM Studio MX (not '04) and pre-CS Adobe products. Should I buy the latest current versions now, to be eligible for the new suite(s) when it(they) comes out?

Well, you wont count for a new CS2 suite, those are already out. MX2006 is due summer-fall, so you're gambling the "month" game. If you feel your MX is time for a MX2006 update, then might as well still do it when released. As for a special Adobe Studio MX2006 + CS Suite combo, I imagine to see it, but it'll be very wierd since I don't need all of all 8 apps! Wierrrdddd.

I don't think anyone need worry. Judging by the press release anything that is going to happen to the brand and products will happen gradually. They seem to suggest that there's mileage in all the separate products for the time being (which there most definately is). The only major thing we may see sooner rather than later is the merging of both brands into one brand. My guess is that the 'Macromedia' brand name willl exist for a while as it's an established brand and has a lot of value, but eventually all Macromedia products will become Adobe branded.

Exactly, good pointing out. I wouldn't mind if they kept the community name "Macromedia", but I highly doubt it. Probably DevNet may stay, and just add about a dozen Adobe products to it... Er, I hope by then we'll know what will stay and what will die. <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well you would hope that nothing useful would 'die', in that they'd be crazy to ditch any of the good things in all the combined products. As long as I have a product that works well and does what I need it to do it can be called 'pink fluffy bunnies MXCSXv23.3.4.5 Lite' and be run by a company called 'The Dog's B******s' for all I care!...

My concern with this merger is that once Dreamweaver is part of Adobe the price will go up to Photoshop levels.

Considering the size and complexity of Dreamweaver I have always considered it pretty good value for money when compared to some other applications.

Having said that we get thoroughly ripped off here in the UK anyway:

Photoshop in the US: $599.00 USD = £316.00 GBP
Photoshop in the UK: £522.00 GBP inc VAT
Increase in real terms: approximately 65%

Dreamweaver in the US: $399.00 USD = £211.00 GBP
Dreamweaver in the UK: £339.00 GBP inc VAT
Increase in real terms: approximately 60%

US prices don't include VAT, so we might expect US prices to work out a little cheaper than UK prices, but to date I have never had an explanation for the additional 40%, or more, we pay for software here in the UK and it really hacks me off.

Regards

Owen.
