Some PDF Attachments will not Open

My problem is simple -- some PDF attachments can be opened and some cannot. Apparently, PDF documents created from Adobe PageMaker will not open in an e-mail when sent with Smart Mailer. I have done some further investigating and found that it could be the size of the attachment. How big can attachments be??
