I, like most of the other people who design websites, am excited about the release of Studio 8.
But, as I was checking out the upgrade prices, I noticed something that I thought was absurd: the upgrade price was the same for pretty much everyone.

EXAMPLE:

I have owned every complete studio package since back in the UD days, including the full MX 2004 Professional Studio which costs $999.
My upgrade price = $399

Joe Schmo buys FreeHand MX several years ago for $199 and doesn't own anything else Macromedia makes.
His upgrade price = $399

Is it just me or shouldn't Macromedia/Adobe be treating their customers that have purchased the full Studio suites a little better deal that this?

I completely agree with you Jeremy!

If MM was smart they will try to bind loyal customers a bit more ... but seems it is all about $$$

From the european side is it however even worse ...

If you think $399 is lots of money ... we have to pay for the same thing 449 euro + 19% vat = 534 euro = $653 USD ...

complete rip-off.

i've tried fw8 out, its not that great.
dw8, i'm very happy with the code help bar, collapsing tags etc.. but yet to find anything else i really like.

just seems to be a lot of new menu items without any added functionality. i'll see how i feel in few weeks when i've had a good go of them.

I was lucky to receive the new version just in time with my DevNet subscription, so no upgrade costs!!!

Installed DW8 on another PC and was very disappointed. My current DW7 installation is much more 'value' for me when it comes to developing websites. I noticed that didn't even add the DevNet extensions (Macromedia developed) as standard functionality in the new version. These are extensions that add functionality to Server Behaviors and would have been smart to add these, because there is no Server Behavior added value in version 8.

It's a shame!

Ok ..so can you tell a relatively newbie whther it is worth it or not to upgrade to Studio 8 or not? I think I might be able to upgrade for free since I just bought it 1 month ago....but again, is it worth it?

I have no doubt that the new suite is amazing and valuable... so I would upgrade if you can get it for free without a doubt.

My comments are not concerning the quailty of the product (I am a huge fan of MM products), just the crazy upgrade prices and how they do not value people that spent large amounts of money on the previous suite.

Here is my suggestion to Macromedia: for those who have a license for the previous suite, give us the upgrade for at least $100 bucks less than the person that only owned one app 3 releases ago.
