I'm pretty good with HTML, JavaScript and other codes. But it always seems that I run into trouble whenever I want to upload my webpage to my hosting site. I use a separate hosting site (web.com) than the company I use for my domain name (register.com). My Dreamweaver skills are all self taught so my lack of knowledge may astound you. Also, the fact that I've created three websites before and still can't figure this out may make you scratch your head as well.

What do I need to do to create this FTP site? Why does my testing site say the connection is good and yet my actual web address give me the "You are not authorized to view this site" message?
Where are these files I didn't create on my web site coming from?

What is the filename of your homepage?

If the server is running Apache then it is configured to look for certain filenames as being your homepage, if it doesn't find one of them then it will give that message or something like it, check your homepage is index.htm or index.html or index.php

If you are seeing other files in there like .htaccess that's a system files, don't mess with it until you are sure you know just what it does, and things like _vti_cnf they are files/folders for use by Frontpage, you don't need them but it's probably best to leave them alone too.

Kunzler.us is the domain name.
My website is bare bones right now. I'll add more content and pages once I know they'll be published online correctly.

Index is shown as index.htm
File names are as follows:

MSFTPSVC240

W3SVC259

I've checked with both Register.com and web.com. All is correct on their end. The DNS is pointed in the right direction and the FTP test worked fine.

Steve,
I tried your url and got the directory listing forbidden error too, also tried manually typing

www.kunzler.us/index.htm
www.kunzler.us/index.html

and a few others into my browser, they all come up with the 404 error, so it looks like the directory is there but the webserver is not finding the files to serve.

I checked your domain name record and the dns then did some investigations - they all looked sensible, but still nothing from the site.

I just had a thought <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> - in DW what is the 'host directory' set to in your remote info?

Most webservers are linux and that has a directory called public_html that contains all the files for your site, there is normally an alias that points to public_html too, so in your remote info in DW you might have your host directory box having something like www/ in it.

On the server, browsers can only get files that are under the www/ directory tree, it may be that the files are all going into a higher level directory and they will not be served from there.

Another way to try - with an ftp client, something like cuteftp, or smartftp, try connecting and examining the structure and contents of what you see.

I've left it blank. I believe I read in the DW handbook that blank was an option. Per your request, I've tried "www/", "www.root" and "www.root/pages/index.htm." Allgave me internal DW error messages sayin DW couldn't find that ftp.

If you leave the host directory blank then DW will connect to the highest 'root' level at your hosting - it will depend on your host whether or not that's the right place.

<img src="www.lakesuk.com/temp_images/directory.jpg" border=0>

this is what I get when I connect to my server using an ftp client, best thing there is to download a trial version of either cuteftp or smartftp, they are both free for test periods. The great benefit of them is that you can actually see the directory layout - well you can in DW too if you use the remote view.

Your website files must go into public_html or www

In reality www is an alias of public_html

So, your DW setup should look something like this
<img src="www.lakesuk.com/temp_images/dw_remote_setup.jpg" border=0>

If those images don't show up then they are on a page here

www.lakesuk.com/temp_images/

If that doesn't sort it then it sounds like a support call to your hosting service is needed

Yeah, I know how to use the remote view. As I said, these are the only files that show up:

As you can see, I don't even have an "public.html" folder and I still have no idea what the files MSFTPSVC240 or W3SVC259 do. But that shouldn't be that much of a surprise, given my lack of knowledge with DW.

So if I simple create a "public.html" folder in the remote view, how do I insure that Interland.com will be directed there to see my website?

Okay
Downloaded a free version of CuteFTP. No change. Still getting a 403 error code.

Might be because I know less about CuteFTP than I do DW.

If you want to give me your server login and pw I will have a quick look and see what's there, I think you would be able to send a private message.

BUT - if you decide to give them to me it's on the basis that there is nothing on your server that I can damage in any way and that I have no liability for anything express or implied

BTW those images on the previous post may not show because I have anti-leeching measures set up

Maybe later.
Here's another problem I'm seeing. It appears there is an endless amount of www.root files created on my network. I click on to kunzler.us and it gives me the pages, images and other folders but on the bottom is another www.root file. If I click on to it, another file opens with my pages, images and other folders....and another www.root file. This goes on and on and on.

Any idea what the deal is?

Nevermind. I got it working. As long as I know it will post to my site, the rest is just trial and error.

Well, until I start learning more about ASP, CSS and ColdFusion.
