I need to create an old school type cross tab query

I have found a pretty good example here

and with as bit of shoe horning I have managed to get it to do what I want with the exception that I also need to total all rows and columns.

firstly is there a better way of doing this, this site the final page is to be used on cannot use any plugins at all so flex is out.

secondly anyone have any ideas how to add a count function to both rows and columns in this example?
