I prefer using an program such as that offered by Real, which is essentially an annual subscription service that provides some support benefits as well as software updates as they are released, including new version releases. Although there weren't many updates last year through Real, I had no problem renewing my subscription, simply to avoid repurchasing (upgrading) my software.
I believe Discreet is also migrating to this type of program for 3d Studio Max. I agree that with the mostly negative feedback on the upgrade price for MX 2004. I also feel somewhat "cheated" because I don't receive a larger discount since I have DW 2, 3, Utradev, MX, etc.
