XML in Flash

XML is fundamental in today's internet. It can be used to replace databases (in certain circumstances) or allow users to syndicate content. This tutorial shows you how to use Flash and XML. XML packets can sent and received using the XML class by using the load, send and sendAndLoad methods or you can use Flash MX Professional 2004's new XMLConnector to send and receive packets and bind them to other components on the Stage at runtime.

Introduction to Scalable Inman Flash Replacement (sIFR)

HTML limits what you can do with font styling on the web. Pick a stylin' font that's only on your system, and your visitors get a fall back font; that's the way it works, or rather used to work...This presentation will introduce you to a technique, called Scalable Inman Flash Replacement (sIFR), which will allow you to use that hot new font on the pages you create, without being forced to use images, all in a easy to use, unobtrusive, backwards compatible, search-engine friendly manner by using a nifty combination of Flash and JavaScript.

Disable - Enable the Flash Plugin (5 - MX) easily

This will allow you to Disable - Enable the flash plugin ( v.5 or v.MX ) installed in IE by a simple click.

This is quite practical when testing to see what the users without the Plugin will see.

The way this works is quite simple, by running this .bat files we just rename (using DOS) the Plugin files, making them unavailable for the browser to use. To re-enable them, the enable bat files renames them back to their correct names.

  1. Unzip the "" file.
  2. (OPTIONAL if you allready have both plugins installed) - Copy the 2 .ocx files into your C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash or C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash (WinXP users)
  3. Put the 3 .bat files somewhere in your c: Drive
  4. Thats it! Close any browser Window and just double click any of the self explanatory .bat files for the desired setting

ONLY WORKS IN WINNT - For XP users in the .bat files change the Path on the first line from :

cd C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash to cd C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

The .zip file contains 5 files:

> disable_flash.bat - This disables flash alltoghether

> enable_flash5.bat - This enables the flash 5 plugin.

> enable_flash6.bat - This enables the flash MX plugin.

> swflash.ocx - This IS the Flash 5 Plugin ( in C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash )

> enable_flash6.bat -  This IS the Flash MX Plugin ( in C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\Flash )

Contact Me if you have any problems!

nb: .bat files have the potential to be harmful for your PC. You can right click on theses files and open them in Notepad to see what they do.

Displaying Multiple Access Records with Flash and ASP

Most Flash & ASP tutorials only deal with returning one row of information at a time from the database to the Flash movie. I was interested in displaying multiple records and fields simultaneously. One resource ( pointed the way and I used this start to arrive at a nice solution which is explained here.

Bringing SOAP to Flash 5

Flash 5 has support for XML communications over HTTP. However, sadly enough, there is no support for setting HTTP headers. The 'SOAPAction' HTTP header is however essential if you want to communicate with SOAP-compliant webservices.

And what is very popular these days ?

Yes, SOAP-based webservices...

Do you, as a Flash developer, want to have access to these functionalities (check out for an overview of some of the webservices available to you today) ?

If so, check out this tutorial!
