Unlicensed Installations of Windows 8 Pro

Users running pirated copies of Windows 8 Pro can reportedly upgrade to a fully licensed and permanently activated version of the OS by simply installing a free Windows 8 Media Center upgrade offered by Microsoft. The relatively simple technique that essentially allows users to get Windows 8 Pro for free was described late Tuesday on Reddit by a user named noveleven who claims to have successfully tried it out. At least one other Reddit user confirmed that it works in the same discussion thread.

Windows 8 PC Orders Are Weak

Computer sellers have scaled back their expectations of the sales pop they'll get from Windows 8 this year. Brian White, of Topeka Capital Markets, said that his checks of Asian computer manufacturers - the relatively unknown firms that build desktop and notebook PCs to specifications issued by the likes of Hewlett-Packard and Dell - found that orders last month climbed by less than half the average of the last seven years.

Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7

Microsoft Won't Bring DirectX 11.1 to Windows 7

Windows 8 will have sole custody of DirectX 11.1, according to a Microsoft engineer. Responding to a question on an MSDN forum, Daniel Moth, a Microsoft program manager, broke the news that at this point there was no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7. That same holds true for versions prior to Windows 7, leaving the new DirectX version exclusive to Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012.

Windows Head Steven Sinofsky Leaves Microsoft

Steven Sinofsky, the Microsoft executive in charge of Windows, has left the company. Julie Larson-Green is to assume control of Windows software and hardware engineering, and CFO Tami Reller will be in charge of the Windows business. The changes are effective immediately, and no reason was given for Sinofsky's departure. He said in a statement that it was impossible to count the blessings he received over his years at Microsoft. He was humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone he had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company.

Microsoft Releases Skype Preview for Windows Phone 8

A preview version of the new Skype app for Windows Phone 8 is now available to download. First announced last month, the app is a more complete incarnation of the VoIP client than Windows Phone 7 users had before; features include the ability to run in the background, incoming calls that match the style of regular phone conversations, and lock screen notifications.

Microsoft Slates First Windows 8, RT Patches

Microsoft announced it will issue six security updates next week, including three for Windows 8 and its tablet spin-off Windows RT. The half-dozen updates will patch 19 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer (IE) and the .Net framework. The four critical updates - the highest threat ranking in Microsoft's four-step system - will patch 13 bugs, including an unknown number in Windows Server 2012, Windows 8 and Windows RT, the operating system that powers Microsoft's own Surface RT tablet.

Microsoft Office for iOS, Android Could Debut Next Year

iOS and Android users may finally see a mobile version of Microsoft Office designed for their devices. Office Mobile, as it's dubbed, would let Microsoft account users view Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files on their mobile devices. But, the Verge said that, editing the documents would require an Office 365 subscription. The apps would reportedly provide basic editing functionality but nothing close to that of their desktop counterparts.

Microsoft: Skype and Messenger Coming Together

Mary Jo Foley has already seen and now used the new Windows 8 Skype client. She has heard there's a Windows Phone 8 Skype client coming - though it's still not in the Windows Phone Store and Skype reps are not sharing more on when it will be. Yesterday, the Skype team provided more information about its recently stated plans to ultimately replace Windows Live Messenger with Skype. According to a new Skype blog post, the planned cutover date is Q1 2013.

Kinect Fusion Is Coming For Windows SDK

Kinect Fusion, the Microsoft Research project which uses the Kinect sensor to create 3D models of objects and environments, will be made available in the Kinect for Windows SDK. No word yet on when exactly that integration will go live, however – Microsoft only confirmed it will come in a future release of the developer toolkit. That same SDK was just updated in October, however, which brought a number of new features, including access to extended-range depth data beyond 4 meters – a necessary upgrade for something like Kinect Fusion to properly function.
