Azure Mobile Services Now Supports Windows Phone 8

Windows Azure Mobile Services will now support Windows Phone 8. The news came in the keynote at the Microsoft Build conference where focus is all about Azure, the Microsoft cloud infrastructure. The new addition means Windows Phone 8 can use the Windows Azure backend engine for push notifications. According to a blog post, Windows Phone 8 can use a single framework that supports multiple formats while allowing the apps to be distributed broadly through the Windows Store.

SmartGlass Fully Launches on Windows 8

Microsoft confirmed Tuesday that its Xbox SmartGlass companion app will launch with full functionality on Windows 8. The app will be built-in to the "Games" section on Windows 8 and RT PCs and tablets, which are launching on October 26th. Microsoft released an updated version of SmartGlass this week, alongside an updated Xbox Music app that offers free streaming and a Pandora-like Radio DJ feature. The apps come as Microsoft begins pushing out its updated dashboard, which is slated to roll out across the world.

Microsoft Kicks Off Free Office 2013 Upgrades

Microsoft on Friday launched an Office upgrade offer that gives customers who purchase the current Office 2010 a free copy of the upcoming Office 2013. The deal, stuck with the official title of "Microsoft Office Pre-launch Offer," started Oct. 19 and ends April 30, 2013. Customers who buy a retail copy of Office 2010 for Windows or one of several stand-alone applications within that period can download a free copy of the corresponding version of Office 2013, or in some cases, choose a free one-year subscription to an Office 365 plan.

IE10 May Get a New Test Build for Windows 7

Microsoft will finally launch a preview of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 in mid-November. With the Windows 8 launch less than two weeks away, Microsoft has obviously been focusing on the release of Internet Explorer 10 for its new operating system lately. Internet Explorer 10, after all, will be an integral part of Windows 8, both on the Metro/Windows 8 UI side of the OS and on the classic desktop. As far as IE10 for Microsoft’s older operating systems, though, the company has stayed relatively quiet until now.

Windows 8 Gets A Post-RTM Update

Microsoft announced a post-RTM update for Windows 8 that will bring a number of improvements to the company’s new operating system ahead of its full launch on October 26. This update, which follows a similar update to virtually all of the built-in Windows 8 Metro apps earlier this week, will bring improvements in broad areas of performance, power management and battery efficiency, media playback, and compatibility.

Microsoft Delivers Beta of Azure Services

Microsoft is moving ahead with plans to add some of its new Windows Azure services to Windows Server 2012, announcing the beta release of those services on October 8. In server and Cloud Blog post officials said that their plan is to deliver the final versions of these services, which include virtual machine hosting and Web-site hosting for Windows Server, by early 2013.

Windows Phone 8 Launch on October 29

Microsoft will officially launch Windows Phone 8 on October 29. The launch venue will be somewhere in San Francsico, according to this invitation which Microsoft mailed to us media types on October 4. It's important to keep in mind what launch means in this case. October 29 is not the day that Windows Phone 8 devices will be in stores. It isn't the date that all carriers will be opening up for pre-orders. (That pre-order date will likely be sooner for most.)

Microsoft Takes the Wraps off TypeScript

On October 1, Microsoft took the wraps off TypeScript, a new programming language that is aimed at making JavaScript development scale beyond the client. Microsoft has made available to those interested via its CodePlex site a preview of the TypeScript bits; the TypeScript language specification; and the source code for the TypeScript compiler. TypeScript is available under an Apache 2.0 open-source license.

Microsoft Revamping its MSN Portal for Win8

Microsoft plans to make a touch-optimized version of its MSN portal available to users running Windows 8/Windows RT and Internet Explorer 10 as of October 26. Microsoft officials are showing off a near-final preview of that portal in New York during Advertising Week, which kicks off this week on October 1. They also will be showing off new touch-centric Windows 8/Windows RT ads that will be available on MSN and on select Windows Store apps during this week's advertising confab.
