I would like to know if it is possible to completely remove all titles, captions and the caption background so that I only show the slides. The reason is that any messages on the slides are part of the actual image. The reason is because I am using highly stylized text for a specific look and there is no need for any titles or captions at all.

I tried going into the nivo-slider.css file and commenting out all the caption and title properties, but it killed the slider completely.

Any ideas or advice would be helpful.

You can either NOT enter any title/description or put display:none to them into the css. Please provide a link to your site.
