Require Upload unticked but get error message when no file uploaded

My form is working fine when I upload a file, however sometimes there is no file to upload. I have therefore not ticked the Require Upload box, however when I try to upload without a file, I get the following error: Upload Error Possible file upload attack: %s

The database is set to accept NULL entries on this field. Can you help?
