I would like to have the gallery open when the page loads. It would also be nice if there is no gallery, to have the gallery button open to a blank entry and have the upload button visible.

  Hello William,
will you, please, provide some reasoning why would you need that?

Yes, I have a page that shows information about historic properties in my area. If there are photos associated with that property, I would like them to display in the gallery when the page opens, rather than forcing the user to click on the photos icon.

  Hello William,
This really doesn't make sense. The editor Image Gallery Add-on is enabling the user to access Images already uploaded on the server in order to use them in the text he is entering/editing in the AHE. It is not really a gallery. That is why it is set as a button for accessing a tool.
I don't see the usage in having it open initially.

To show you an example of how I would like to use the Gallery (your name) add on, please see www.behse.org/slfhp/TestGallery.asp?ID=1 It would be nice if the photos appear on the right without clicking on the link. If you do not intend for this product to be used as a gallery, then you should name it something else.
