Microsoft adds TV shows to Zune
Microsoft announced it starts selling TV shows on the Zune Marketplace amongst which will be popular NBC series. Zune is the company`s equivalent to well-known Apple`s iPod.
Starting Tuesday, the company will provide with episodes of Comedy Central's "South Park" and Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" for the price of $1.99 each.
This move by Microsoft that brings selection of content for the digital media player
is considered a step closer to what Apple Inc.'s iTunes offers for its iPod. Yet, Microsoft reckons its a step further carrying NBC shows including "The Office" and "Heroes." NBC Universal withdrew its shows from iTunes because Apple refused to set different prices for TV shows.
Microsoft spokesman Jason Reindorp said flexible pricing is within the
scope of its agreement with NBC, but that there are no concrete plans. He also said TV shows aren't available as part of the subscription service yet,
but that the company is looking this year at making Zune Pass less
expensive or including more content in the monthly fee. Zune Pass subscription service, which gives users access to every song in the catalog for $14.99 per month.
The software giant also plans to update the software of the Zune devices and the PCs used to
buy and manage digital content, enriching it with new features overnight. One of the software updates planned for Monday night will make it
possible to synchronize several Zunes wirelessly and simultaneously
with the same computer. And another will let users choose new content to send to a
Zune next time it's in range while sitting at their PCs since before, a Zune's user had to connect the
device to a PC to tweak its contents.
