Book review of "Speed Up Your Site" by Andy King (free)
Did you know that, for the majority of users, the average site feels twice as slow as it did seven years ago? Neither did I, and it's just one of the eye-opening statistics quoted in " Speed Up your Site" by Andy King. In this review, Bruce Lawson goes through the book and examines its usefulness, and shares some of the many real-world tips from this ruthlessly practical book.
DMXzone verdict on the book
It's a very dense book, and not an easy read; the extensive footnotes and technical detail makes it feel quite academic, although the techniques within are very real world, adopted by companies like Yahoo! and King's own javascript.com.
If you're running a small site, or a blog, you might not need this book; the techniques that would apply to you are detailed elsewhere for less money, and many of the techniques are simply more time-consuming to implement than would be worth your while. For the 6 people who read my personal blog, for example, I'm not going to spend days performance tuning it.
But if you're running a medium to large site, I am convinced that this book will save you time and money; money savings because you'll pay less bandwidth charges, you'll have more repeat visitors and so more advertising dollars or online sales. If you're in this medium to large enterprise, there is nothing I have read that even comes close to this book in authoritativeness.
A good way to find out if you do need this book is to type min your URL to the web site analyser at www.webpageanalyzer.com
If you need this book, it's an excellent buy.
