Book Review: The Flash Anthology Cool Effects and Practical ActionScript

There's a chance you might not be familiar with releases from SitePoint – you won't find their printed books on the shelves of many bookshops, as primarily they sell direct from their tremendous website.

So I have to admit I was pretty pleased when Matt Mickiewicz contacted us here at DMXzone and offered us the chance to carry some content from their latest release (Steven Grosvenor's, The Flash Anthology: Cool Effects and Practical ActionScript) and to let us review it.

Personal Assessment

I personally think this book would make a great addition to the bookcase of any 'just past basics' Flash developer wanting to expand their repertoire. Indeed I even think it's suitable for the reasonably aware Website builder, who has a passing familiarity with scripting and just wants to use Flash to solve a clearly defined problem. I know we should all take our time to read the manuals and understand the fundamentals, but this book (and its associated download), does make it remarkably easy to add a little bit of Flash spice to your Web projects with the minimum of effort.

As the books sub-heading puts it, this publication delivers Practical Solutions to Common Problems and does so in a lively, accessible manner. It won't give you a basic introduction to Flash, it won't teach you the basic principles of programming logic, but it will enable you to create great effects and give you a toolbox of snippets you can learn from and build upon.
