According to ZDnet online holiday spending rose 25 percent to 30 percent from a year ago. Hot items were computer hardware, consumer electronics and clothing.

A report from Goldman Sachs, Nielsen/NetRatings and Harris Interactive stated that between Oct. 29 and Dec. 23 retail shoppers in the U.S. spent $30.1 billion online, up 30 percent from the same period a year ago.

According to latimes.com Google will unveil its own low-price personal computer or other device that connects to the Internet.

Sources say Google has been in negotiations with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., among other retailers, to sell a Google PC. The machine would run an operating system created by Google, not Microsoft's Windows, which is one reason it would be so cheap — perhaps as little as a couple of hundred dollars.

Patches out for IE holes, Sony-related issue

Microsoft on provided a fix for a "critical" security flaw in Windows. The software maker released the patch in security bulletin MS05-054, as part of its monthly patching cycle. The update also plugs three other security holes in Internet Explorer, the Web browser component of Windows. One of the other flaws is also deemed critical, but Microsoft said it is not aware of any malicious code that takes advantage of it.
