Hey everyone,

I'm planning to make a set of wooden drink coasters as a small weekend project and could use some advice. I'm wondering what type of wood works best for coasters in terms of durability, aesthetics, and resistance to moisture.

I've seen options ranging from maple and walnut to bamboo and cedar. Should I be sealing them with something specific to protect against water rings? Also, any design tips or finish suggestions would be appreciated!

Looking for a rustic but clean look. What’s worked best for you in your coaster-making experience?

Thanks in advance!

For durability, aesthetics, and moisture resistance, walnut and maple are excellent choices. Both are sturdy, with nice grain patterns. Bamboo is eco-friendly and lightweight but may be softer, while cedar offers a rustic look but isn’t as durable in high-moisture conditions.

When making wooden drink coasters, it's important to seal them properly to protect against water rings. Seal your coasters with a polyurethane or water-based lacquer finish. A matte or satin finish works best for a rustic, clean look. For design, consider simple geometric shapes or a live edge to maintain the rustic vibe, and wood-burning can add a personal touch.

For DIY drink coasters, hardwoods like maple, walnut, or cherry are great choices. They’re durable, resist moisture well, and have a smooth finish that looks clean and polished. Just make sure to seal the wood properly to protect it from water damage.
