When I select my images folder the photos do not appear (though they are definately in there). Also there is no dmx toolbar, I tried it by going to insert, css gallery to get the pop up box. I am using Dreamweaver CS3.

Please, try to insert images again and this time after electing the source folder check the path that is set in the DMX Resize.
Also provide some information on your OS.

Thanks but not sure what you mean about the path - it is at the Source Images Folder bit that when I select my folder there are no photos showing in it, it says no items match your search. I have a PC, Windows Vista.

Yes, the Source Images Folder part - check it the path is same as you have selected. Because there is one DW bug that after selecting a path it omits the last folder.
I.e. you select siteroot/images/gallery but it renders as siteroot/images/
