Is there any way to auto hide the caption overlay and nav buttons in CSS Image Gallery, so that they only appear when gallery moused over?

Unfortunately there is no such built in functionality within the extension.
Your question now is in the wishlist schedule for future updates, and our developers will consider if such functionality will be implemented.

An extra label box for the thumnails this would make text appear below the thubnail image so people know what each of the pictures is going to be.
