Dreamweaver 8: Possibilities in Application of XML

In the previous article, we started our journey into the world of applications with Dreamweaver 8.  We talked about PHP5 and the new support built into the product.  Then we turned our attention to the fantastic XML integration built into Dreamweaver 8.  In Dreamweaver MX 2004, we had the ability to import a schema so the custom tags would be available in code hinting and completion and this was pretty cool; certainly sped up work flow.  And we had the ability to create an XML document; as long as you typed it, but of course you had the custom tags if you had imported the schema, so it wasn’t all that bad.

Overview

Dreamweaver 8, however, has not only raised the XML bar; it’s redefined the tool.  Now you can create XSL pages or fragments and quickly deploy your XML datasource using these tools.  Now you can apply an XSLT Transformation in the matter of a few clicks.  This is good stuff, folks!

Also, in this article, we have a freebie for you.  George Petrov of the DMX Zone created an extension that allows you to quickly create a sitemap in the root of your site that is compatible with Google Sitemaps!  It’s quick and easy and it’s what dynamic site developers, in particular, need badly.  So get ready and let’s have a look at the conclusion of our XML Integration tour!

In early 1996, Nancy Gill picked up her first book on HTML and permanently said goodbye to the legal field. She has been busy ever since developing web sites for businesses, organizations and social groups in Central California and occasionally beyond. Nancy has served as a member of Team Macromedia since late 2001, first with UltraDev and then moving to Dreamweaver when the programs were consolidated in 2002. She also serves as Assistant Manager for the Central California Macromedia User's Group.
