Covering the Gamut
Within the past few weeks, much has happened with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social media platforms. In this article, I'll divvy up the social media venues that I've covered thus far (and more) so I can provide you with some tools and tips that may help to make your life a bit easier – or, at least more interesting.
Facebook recently doubled its user base within the past year, and now boasts more than 300 million users. With that size, users might expect some problems to occur. Out of nowhere, reports of a worm spread on Facebook as the worm began to hijack wall posts and threaten to compromise users' computer security.
- How to Avoid the Worm: Users can be vulnerable if they click a link in their news feed which appears to be from a friend. The text before the link reads: "lmao! i cant stop laughing at you in this pic, when did you do this?"
- In the meantime, Facebook has created Tornado, the framework that Friendfeed was built on. It focuses on real-time web services, namely connections that need to be open all the time. And, it can handle a ton of connections. Tornado is written in Python too, a language that has recently taken off amongst web developers.
- Facebook also has partnered with Nielsen over the next year to create BrandLift, an advertising effectiveness measurement tool that the partners hope will push the bar high for social networking ads.
- Combining old and new marketing, you can take a page from billboard advertising like the Forest County Chamber of Commerce did in Wisconsin. They erected a billboard on a local highway to advertise its Facebook page and urge people to "Become a Friend of Crandon." According to Chamber President Mike Gruett, motel bookings have increased 12 percent since the Facebook page was created last spring. He says the number of "friends" has tripled to nearly 700 since the billboard went up in early September.
Linda Goin
Linda Goin carries an A.A. in graphic design, a B.F.A. in visual communications with a minor in business and marketing and an M.A. in American History with a minor in the Reformation. While the latter degree doesn't seem to fit with the first two educational experiences, Linda used her 25-year design expertise on archaeological digs and in the study of material culture. Now she uses her education and experiences in social media experiments.
Accolades for her work include fifteen first-place Colorado Press Association awards, numerous fine art and graphic design awards, and interviews about content development with The Wall St. Journal, Chicago Tribune, Psychology Today, and L.A. Times.
