Just a small quesion, now that ive gotten the hang of basic queries, everything has opened up heaps.

Is it quicker to pull a query from a database that does calculations and such, and then filter it on the page,

or

is it quicker to do everything on the page?

It's faster if it's in SQL Server. Smaller page means less communication between client and server.
