  I think you should be comfortable enough with the site management window that is provided. in case of frequntly used files you have your assets library....Just a suggestion., May be i have not got your requirement right

  Actually I was looking for an extension or sample coding that I could put on a set of web pages so that viewers would have immediate access to other files/pages of that same topic/directory.

Now I got what you want..I still dont have the extension but I can surely give an idea of how it should be constructed.I think it should closely model on the ultradev help files navigation system to be profiecient enough.I sincerly suggest that you or somebody else proceed on these lines ..
