I don't think it is possible but maybe I am wrong. Is there any reason you can't use tables and must use layers. It's easy with tables.

Like Davrus was saying... if you can use tables... they are far more reliable and you can center it on the page..
although if you must use tables you should be able to put in 50% as the property of L and it will align the left side of the layer with the center of the page

If you need to use layers I will have to ask you who will see your site. I have a similar problem with that since I want a layer with scroll in it.
The way I solve it was design the interface for 800x600 people so I gave it a fix coordinated to the layer so it wouldnt move.. however if a 1200x800 see the site. It wont affect cuz all the interface will be layed to the right... so he will just get a bunch of blank space.
good luck <img src=../images/dwzone/forum/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Layers are positioned using an x & y coordinate, so centering them in a page is not quite feasible taking into account all the different resolutions.
Though it may be possible using some DHTML
