Well, if you need to test SSL with a host, more than likely they have a method setup for such. Ie, on my host's NT servers, you use their server, along with a preset directory which virtually maps to a different directory on your server. Any data sent in that directory becomes encrypted in SSL.

Grab a copy of VeriSign's E-Commerce white paper, to give you some general info about the set up.
I'm in the same scenario as you, and am finding it hard to get good advice.
It's not as easy as it seems i think.

I was in the same position as you about 18 months ago.
I would recomend that as an introduction you try a product like Actinic. www.actinic.co.uk/
Although it is a template based e-commerce productivity tool, it is fairly customisable and will provide a good introduction to e-commerce solutions.
Checkout this site which was the 1st e-commerce site I designed using actinic www.cookersandcoolers.co.uk
Most of the site was designed using dreamweaver and the catalogue part is Actinic. Most people would not even know I used Actinic because I replaced their graphics with ones I produced.
The alternative is that you design a site from the groung up which to be honest is not really an option for you.
Another option of course is that you provide the sales role and close the deal then sub contract the work to me.
A realistic sale price for a site like cookers and coolers is between £3K and £5K
I could do the work for you for £1.5k to £2.5k
If you can get enough clients, you can lay on the beach while I do all the work, and the client will receive a secure and professionally design site at a reasonable price.
The big question is are you a salesman or a designer?
Whatever you decide I wish you all the best.
