The basic difference between DW and UD is that DW allows you to design/build a website with static content (everything on the pages has been put there by you)
Whereas UD allows you to design/build a website with dynamic content which is taken from a database and manipulated and displayed in the way you want it.
If it comes down to a choice between the two go for UD because it can do both types of websites whereas DW can only do static sites, unless of course you go for DWMX which can also do both.
