Is anyone fimiliar with inserting two optional fields?

I have created a form on which my client can enter occasions for his company.

He want's to have the option to select the car brand and model from a pull-down list. But if the specific car brand or model isn't available in the list, He can enter the the car brand or model in case in a textfield.

How can I modify the insert record behaviour, that in insert's either the car brand and model from a selection list or from a textfield if it's used.

Is it possible to do this on the client side with a javascript? Using a hiddenhield to retrieve the value of the dropdownlist or from the textfield if it's filled? And using the hiddenfield in the insert record behaviour?
