Can 8Kb pages be the cause of slow intrawebtraffic

In our company I am responsable for the intrawebsite. Since more than 1 year we are facing the problem that things are going very slowly If you trty to use the intrtaweb. To set things straight for now and for ever I need your advice (=means verdict for me).Can somebody be the judge of our internal "intraweb-problem" and indicate who is probably NOT the cause (slight difference hé, I do not want to know who is the one to blame I just want to know who is NOT).
For some persons in the company the "intrawebsite" is the cause of everything. The pages are too huge and it takes too long to load (it seems?). The graphics are showing the same symptoms. So I am the black sheep as being responsable for the intrawebhappening.
As for as I know, Dreamweaver is a unique instrument to built sites that are not too heavy and suits perfect to the needs of a fast website. I already trimmed the site from pages that were 30Kb to the amount of 10. But now it's either the software or me or both that have reached their limit(s).
Using Dreamweaver and Fireworks I developed the following company site. If you give me an adress where I can send some of the code, so you can judge for yourself if it is Dreamweaver or me who is responsible for all the mess. The total amount of the site = 130Mb.
The (intra)homepage is composed : Leftframe: 4Kb MainFraime: 4Kb.
The links on the LeftFrame refer to pages as follows:
ADV to an indexpage of 15Kb.
AUD2 11Kb.
BKH3 11Kb.
BUD4 8Kb.
FIS5 12Kb.
INT6 9Kb.
JUR7 12Kb.
SEC8 16Kb.
SOW 9Kb.
The link "SOW9" is the one you can try to see how this works out. As you can notice each linked page is 6Kb (the other from ADV1 to SEC8 sometimes are linked to pages of 15 or 16Kb).
As you also will notice the lower links on the LeftFrame are composed as follows:
INFO 10Kb.
ZOEK 5Kb.
HELP 3Kb.
LINKS 33Kb.
@TLFX 11Kb.
The links "ZOEK" and "@TLFX" are not working due to some private reasons. The rest of the linked pages are neat HTML-code produced by Dreamweaver. Some contain JavaScripts but for sure there is NO Flash or other animations. As I mentioned earlier I trimmed drastically.
The webserver is "APACHE" on a Pentium III (550) running on Windows 2000 Professional. This computer is part of a network where employees have to log in on the server (running on Windows 2000 Server). This is the same server where they have to login If they are homeworking.
If employees are logging in directly on the webserver (skipping the server) they notice that their screen is not flikkering and , very important, they do not hang. This happens frequently!! Maybe this is a simple way of thinking, but If one way is causing you trouble (server way) and you try another approach (directly to the webserver) and this works perfect than I think the intrawebsite can not be the cause. Sorry If I am wrong.
In the near future I want to work with PHP and MySQL. But before this "adventure" I am asking your advice in this "hot item".
Is yes or no the code (pages) responsable for the slow traffic?
Looking forward,
Jef Gees

Pages below 40Kb shouldn't cause much of a problem, even pages aboove this should be reasonably quick on an intranet set up.
As to the slow performance of your intranet, there are just so many variables that it would be impossible to say where the bottleneck is from the information you've provided.
What speed is the network? 10Mbs, 100Mps or perhaps a wireless LAN?
Does the network have hubs or switches? What speed are they?
Is it a peer to peer network?
etc. etc.

Owen.

Hi JefGees
I also design and maintain an intraweb- most of my pages are between 25-50k and they run perfectly fine on a 10Mbps network. The webserver is an AMD Athlon 800 running Windows 2000 Server with IIS 5.
The intraweb itself is designed with DWMX using PHP and MySQL. In my experience, PHP is much much faster than ASP over networks, although this may have been caused by the fact i was using PWS at the time.
If your 'direct' link to the webserver is working fine, you should try to isolate the problem by testing the speed of the links between the Webserver and the hub / switch (as oeastwick said).
Has the problem arisen recently? Have you made any changes that may have triggered it?
