Can anyone else me understand what this error message is all about?

"the new file or folder cannot be created because the path name is too long"

When I download a directory from my server I sometimes get this (on my local side) and I can't mind any reference as to why it happens (if I have 50 files in a directly it may happen to 10 of them.. I can't find the patter as to what's causing it... the filenames seem fairly similar. Thanks
