DW MX Flash Text Problems with Non-System Fonts
27 Jul 2003 03:34:42 Ray Toler posted:
I'm using Dreamweaver MX 6.1 on Mac OS X 10.2.6. The problem I'm experiencing is that when I create Flash Text that uses any font that didn't come with the system, it won't render correctly (it does show the font correctly in the dialog box). I get a square-shaped element with the appropriate background color, but no text. Switching the font to a system-installed font renders correctly. The Macromedia support site doesn't have much on it, but said that corrupt fonts might be a problem. It also recommended rebuilding the font cache. I've verified that the fonts are not corrupt (per Extensis Suitcase 10 and Font Agent Pro), deleted all of the cache files, logged out and back in... no go.
The kicker is that if I go into Flash MX and create the text there, everything is fine: I can import the SWF into DW and everything's hunky dory. So I'm confident that my fonts are ok.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? The specific font I'm trying to use is Adobe Garamond, but none of my 3rd party fonts work with Dreamweaver MX Flash Text...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I knew I should have put why I don't just use Flash MX in my original message...
There are two primary reasons:
1. I don't know Flash. I'm trying to learn it, but I have lots of other fish to fry right now.
2. Even if I did know flash, it seems like an awful lot of trouble to create a simple headline: start Flash MX, create the proper stage size, type the text out, save as .fla and/or .swf, back to Dreamweaver and import.
The entire point of using Flash Text from within Dreamweaver is to quickly get a "custom font" headline or text element. If I'm going to have to go to an external program anyway, I'd rather go to Photoshop or Fireworks and create a gif. More compatability that way anway.
I'd like to get Flash Text working, though.
Thanks very much for the response! I was starting to think no one had seen it fly by.

Ah ha. I see. I will look at it tomorrow and get back to you.
I use Flash a lot but never use the Dreamweaver Flash stuff. I am sure your problem will cross-over though.

I appreciate your checking to see if you have the problem as well. While it would be a small comfort to know that it was a bug (and would thus be fixed in the future), I suspect that the problem is unique to my machine since I couldn't find any other accounts of the behavior on the net.
It'll be good to have confirmation either way, though - that will help simplify my troubleshooting. Thanks!

OK. Infortunately I think its you. It worked fine for me. It could be a MAC thing....I am on a PC.
What happens when you save it and upload the files to a server? Do other people have problems viewing the fonts?
I do see why you would want to use this now. Its pretty darn easy.
