I am just starting with dreamweaver, and have been told I can't add a gallery page(s) for users to add
images and edit their own pics. After spending so much time doing the tutorials and creating my first site, please tell this is not true. Or how can I add theses things>

of course it's possible.

you will need a server that will let you run asp, php or another similiar scripting language. if you want them to be able to upload and edit pics, then you will also need some special extensions or coding depending on what scripting language you choose to do the gallery in.

if you just wished to have a gallery, then no special scripting is needed, there are plenty of products out there that will create html pages with the necessary javascript written for you.

Dave

thanx, Dave
that was the most informative answer I
have received in three days of searching for a solution to my problem.
I do believe they have both asp, php.

But, let me ask you, If I'm using Dreamweaver 4, for the whole site (15 pages or so) what would you reccomend, along the way of "special exts" and/ or coding. also, could you point me in the right direction.

thanx,
jeff

oh, by the way. I just seen your from the U.K. How bout picking me up a copy of "Total Digital Photography"
It costs around $14.00 here.

Hi Jeff,

Yes we are a friendly helpful bunch here!

Reference your question on extensions, there is an excellent extension available from this site called pure asp upload. This clever extension (extension being a product that you install into dreamweaver that is then accessed from the dreamweaver menus) will allow you to quickly set up a user uploading an image or other file.

This is actually a very difficult thing to code yourself (i wouldnt attempt it) and it is the extension that I personally use.

You have the choice of a PHP or ASP version...depends which technology you decide to use.

here is a link to the product:

www.dmxzone.com/index.asp?TypeId=3&CatId=69

For handling a dynamic gallery it would well be worth you thinking of the smart image processor, as this will create all your thumbnails for you. It works with pure upload.
Details of it are also available from the link I gave you.

Vince

you may need to update your version of dreamweaver too Jeff.

you just using the standard version of dreamweaver 4? or ultradev 4?

you see, the ultradev and following versin of DW, will let you code things in php, asp easily. I'm not saying that you can't do it in normal Dreamweaver, but it would be a lot harder, with quite a bit of hand coding.

Dave

thanx bakerv, ultradave.
things are looking up. yeah, i plan on getting dreamweaver mx. I was just trying out the demo of '4'. since iam so new to creating a site. i wanted to see what the program was like. are thier any major differences between dreamweaver 4 and mx as to the basic way of creating pages, not just new features?

but, yeah, i believe i'll pick up dreamweaver mx.
quick question though...a friend of mine said i should check out adobe's "go live". any comments on this software?

TO BAKERV...so, if i get the pure asp upload, and the image editor, what i am supposed to do with the pure upload if its that hard to code? are there any guides?

'cause i have been learning html through a dummies book and an extensive c++ book and cd learning kit. but, if it is that hard, i don't want to screw things up too, bad...

Hi,

I think you may have misunderstood what I wrote (or what I wrote was not clear). Pure Asp upload means you dont have to code yourself, it is a simple wizard like extension that enables you to upload a file and writes all the code for you.

I've never really clicked with Adobe software apart from Acrobat for making pdf's.
I don't really like the interface of the software packages so tend not to use them.

You will notice some differences between dw4 and dwmx2004, the latter has lots more stuff built in, but the answer to your main question is no, there is no major difference on how to construct a page.

The software comes built in with a load of server behaviours for doing stuff like, creating login pages, search pages, and other exciting stuff. Plus this is another non-coding enviroment if you just use the standard behaviours.
Fill the wizards in and away you go.

Dave

ya, bakerv. It just read kinda weird. but, understand now.

ultradave, I am using the standard v. of dreamweaver 4. It came as a demo with my "html for dummies".

should have gotten a different book. it's so, basic. 2+2=4, 4+4=16,blah, blah, blah.

Now, since I'm finally in a hotel that has high speed(wireless), i just downloaded a demo of dmx. wow!!! that is alot of money. My wife might kick my... Hey, if you want to learn, learn with the best, right?

but, it's still kinda pricey, since I'm a newbie.
hey, mothers day is coming...hmmmmm.
