I am trying to create my first website. Should I try to do so using tables in Dreamweaver? or should I focus on CSS? If CSS, can anyone recommend a tutorial? Lastly, could a site be designed totally in Fireworks? As I mentioned, this is my first attempt so please spell it out for me as best as you can.
thanks!

I am not the best at this, but you can design your entire site in FW and then do an export to DW to finalize everything. You would also have to "slice" everything up and export the images.

well as your just starting out i'm not sure what yuor going to be more concerned about, your website or your code that you write.
CSS is the way to go, whether you are using tables or not. You can style your page completely in CSS or do it normally as tables but set all the table properties thru the CSS.
if you want CSS tutorial, try:
www.meyer.web
www.alistapart.com
www.bluerobot.com
these should have more than enough to get you on your way
