JPEG/GIF quality degrading over time

is this a basic that I missed way back when I started this stuff? I am noticing some of my images are degrading over time...

<b>Well, are you editing already compressed JPG's?</b> If you don't use a raw (high quality) graphic file to work off, like from Fireworks/Photoshop/..., and export as needed. That's all if you're editing a exported graphic of any format.

You could be more active compressing web graphics day-to-day.
