text diving characters??

Hi to you all, This may be a school boy question but what is the character many designers use to seperate text i.e. the 'l' (L) shape character between words - I thought it was an 'L', then I thought it was a right border with CSS, then I have seen a few different shapes.. big dots etc.... can someone please advise..
