I have several articles that I want to put into a collection of some sort, then allow people to search by topic, or even by words within the articles from a page in my website. Would be great if I could display the results on the same page they searched from, I don't know alot about this, is there anyway you could tell me what kind of application/program or method I am gonna need to start tinkering with to incorporate this into the site?

first you need to find out what your server environment is. If windows then ASP-MSAccess could be your natural option. If Apache then PHP-MySql would be your option.
