I created a large document in Fireworks which I have been working on over the last 2 weeks. when I now try to open gives me the dreaded "Could not open the file. Unknown file type" message, am about to cry like a baby!
If anyone could please help me in ways I could restore this file or any techy tricks with this sort of error message would be greatly appreciated.

I've had the same thing happen to me on many occaison but always after storing the .png on a network drive. Are you storing this locally or over a network?
