Just got a one terabyte (made up of 2x 500GB) drive and would really like to do this.
Is there a program or method that can back my entire drive(s) to an image file.

I have tried these:
DriveClone Pro (full version)
Ghost 8.0 (full version) => bad idea
Ghost 14 (full version) => errors, bad idea too
Acronis true image (trial version)

I would to back up my hard drive(s) (preferrably in dos / kernel mode) with no questions asked.

Which is the better one or is there a better one out there.

got something similar - on my mac, with it running RAID 1, plug in, turn on Time Machine, forget about it, it's done. Pure magic

best thing every - you don't ever have to think about backup again it just happens and recovery is so slick you wouldn't believe it

On my pcs I use Freebyte backup onto a Dlink DNS323 again running raid 1 - works well but nothing like the mac

Just got it now.
It seems that the only thing that's possible is backing up folders and cloning drive to drive not converting a drive to an image file.
