I am currently trying to make a shop/connection with a database in Studio MX (the most recent one). I am able to do the DSN bit and when I test that it all works fine, but when I try to insert a recordset it says I need to set up the sites testing server and sends me back to the site definition page - i can get no further. If you can think of anything, please help.

u must have a testing server installed on your system.

PWS for win 98, ME
IIS for NT, 2000 & XP Pro

xp home doesnt come with IIS.

if you have any of these features installed, then your testing server files will all be located in c:\inetpub\wwwroot

this acts as a web server and lets you preview dynamic applications locally.
hope that helps.

Dave

hi - thanks for replying. I have followed a tutorial and got the IIS on my system(I am on Windows 2000 Pro). I have set up a folder in the wwwroot folder and another on desktop. Have set the desktop as my local files, wwwroot address as my testing server and url.
After setting up the DNS and database connectopn ok(I get the "drum" icon), I try to do the bindings to insert a recordset. It is ticked next to "site" and "document type" and when I click on set up testing server, it takes me back to the define sites testing server screen which is already filled out(I did this while setting up the site). I cant get any further than this.

hope this makes sense!

is your testing server set up correctly?

open up the IIS snap in thru your control panel > administrative tools.

open default web site and right click on one of the .asp pages and 'browse', this will test is asp and iis is working if the page displays ok, everything is ok.

if thats fine, then it must be either your url prefix for the testing server, or the site definition is set up wrong.

what is :
I. the location of your files in site
II. the location of the site in testing server
III. your url prefix for testing site.

Why are you uploading to 2 different spots on the same machine?

I would Just select "local/network" instead of FTP and keep it all in the same place.

Make sure your Server Model is set correctly

Please post a screen scot of your testing server set up

I wasnt using FTP at anytime though - all options were set to "local/network" Anyway, where would I find the testing server to take a screen shot of it? Im sorry for being thick, but really appreciate the time you are spending

There are a series of tabs you can goto in DW, one of them is testing server.

I just wanted to see your settings.

All the advice that's been given is sound and is exactly how it should work.
Should work... I have had a similar problem.
Defined my site as usual, set up my Conn string ok - put a recordset in
made a new page and went to create a recordset but dmx had somehow forgotten about my site definition and wanted to set up testing server... so i set it up again, and again...
and again
Then I destroyed the site and recreated it - I've no idea why it did what it did, its not happened before or since

The screenshot didn't post. I would take the advice above and re-create the site.

Also make sure your DW is up to date with the latest service packs. There were some funky bugs in the first release.

there is one thing to consider.

if you have had previous versions of dw on your comp or you have installed, re-installed or un-installed, then dw has a tendancy to not overwrite it's registry settings so a lot of things go wrong from your recordset prob to not being able to create a new site definition etc...

i had this discussion a while back with an old member and it turned out his registry was full of junk from macromedia.

a clean out of all related entries and a re-install and everything was fixed, but i would advise getting help from someone if you don't know how to manipulate the registry.

Dave

Uninstalling then re-installing dmx cleanly may well get things going for you
following on from Dave's advice about cleaning the registry you could get a trial version of jv powertools www.macecraft.com/downloads/ and get that to remove the macromedia stuff that's clogging things up.
It has an option also to remove items that "should be safe to remove"

<disclaimer>Do treat tools that automate cleaning the registry with caution and don't blindly accept everything they say</disclaimer>

Did you manage to get an ASP going in your browser?
e.g. localhost
if that doesn't show the default page then your IIS might be the cause

IIS not working wouldnt stop him from creating a recordset tho would it.

you got ODBC & MDAC drivers installed? they would stop you.

No that's true
But if IIS isn't running would that prevent her from successfully creating a testing server?

Apologies Liz,

In the application window can you browse your database; explore the tables etc?

Also if you look at the code view of the page, does it have an include for your connection string?
Something like
<!--#include file="Connections/seikadojoConn.asp" -->

if it doesnt have a connection then it cant query the DB to get your recordset

Going to give up with the screen shots, as they show up on mine but no one elses! ANYWAY!

This is what the error says - " While executing getComponentChildren, the following JavaScript error(s) occurred:

At line 172 of file "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\DreamweaverMX\Configuration\Components\Common\Connections\Connections.js": exception throw in native function"

Then I can click OK. Any ideas?
